Contact Susan King Email Susan@funfirstagility.com

Thank you for visiting our website!  I would like to apologize if you have contacted me in the past several months.  I was planning to catch up on emails over the Christmas holiday, but life has thrown some interesting challenges at both Janet and me.

Janet lost her husband Bill to a massive heart attack on November 18, 2011.  He was her rock of strength and supported her love of agility in every possible way.  While we were still reeling from this blow, my husband Joe, was rushed to the hospital on December 1, 2011 with acute pancreatitis.  He has been in and out (mostly in) the hospital since then.

We took a break from teaching classes for a few weeks. We now are back teaching classes for our current students who have been absolutely super in their support and offers of help during all of this.  We love teaching agility classes and working with all of our students and their wonderful dogs.  No matter what happens, we intend to continue offering classes.  It is the one bit of sanity left in our world right now and we need to hold on to that desperately.

Because of everything going on in our personal lives right now we can’t currently offer any new classes.  However, we hope we will be able to offer some additional classes in May 2012, so if you have emailed me - hang in there – I will be responding as soon as I can.

Please email me @ susan@funfirstagility.com if you would like to be placed on my email list to be notified when we offer an introductory class, start another group class, or for more details about our classes.

My background: I have been agility training my own dogs since 1990 and teaching agility classes since 1991. I have earned USDAA, NADAC, AKC and CPE agility titles on several different breeds of dogs.

In addition to teaching agility in the evenings and on weekends, I have a regular 8 to 5 Monday through Friday job and volunteer with the Sacramento House Rabbit Society.

Frequently asked questions:

Where are you located? The classes are at 11013 Jackson Road, Sacramento, CA 95830. We are between Excelsior and Sunrise. The training arena is grass with 5’ high chain link fencing surrounding it. The arena is set well back in the property and a very long distance from any road with traffic.

What does it Cost?  $20.00 to attend a group Introductory Class.  This class gives you an introduction to how we teach agility, what equipment you will need to purchase to work with your dog between classes and an introduction to some of the equipment.  Group classes are held once a week and usually run around 1 ½ hours each. The cost is $15.00 per class with a four week commitment. That means that after the first introductory class ($20.00 for this class) and then 7 week long beginning class ($105.00 for this class), you will need to commit to 4 classes at a time for a total cost of $60.00. Class size is usually 4 to 6 dogs, so everyone gets plenty of individual attention and time on the equipment.

Do you offer Private Lessons?  Janet Rhoades and I now also offer private and semi-private lessons. These cost $45.00 for the first lesson and then $30.00 per ½ hour for each class after that. Please email me for more details.

How long will it take for my dog to learn all the equipment?  Each dog progresses at its own pace so there is really no set time that it takes a dog to learn how to do all the equipment. The same is true for the trainer (you). There is a lot to learn about working as a team with your dog and how to correctly handle him, just in case you get hooked on the sport and decide that you want to try and earn some agility titles.

If you just want to have fun, that is fine too. You will need to learn to do the equipment either way, so you might as well learn how to do it correctly. That way if you change your mind and decide to compete, you won't have to re-train anything.

Can I come and watch a class?  Definitely!  We welcome visitors.  We do want you to leave your dog at home though.  That way you can concentrate on observing the class without having to also keep an eye on your dog.

Because our classes are held outdoors, the weather always affects our ability to have classes. We strongly suggest that you email me in advance so we will be able to contact you if the class start time has been changed or the class has to be cancelled due to the weather.
